Nineteen migrants died in a shipwreck in the Strait of Sicily. Fifty-eight survived, were rescued and taken to Lampedusa.

A shipwreck in the Strait of Sicily has claimed the lives of nineteen migrants after they were trapped on a boat rescued by the Italian Coast Guard approximately 85 miles from Lampedusa, in the Libyan SAR area. The initial death toll was 18, but rose during the transfer operations to the Italian island, as more shipwrecked migrants—including several women—lost their lives due to the extreme conditions. Rescuers arrived around 3 a.m., and numerous bodies were already on the boat. The surviving migrants and the bodies of the deceased were transferred to patrol boats and transported to Lampedusa in a desperate journey that lasted hours, as sea conditions worsened and temperatures remained frigid.
